Montreal Canadiens legend and all time great Bernard "Boum-Boum" Geoffrion passed away Saturday morning, after a bout with cancer.
Growing up, I read the biography (for children) of his teammate and fellow legend Maurice "Rocket" Richard, where I learnt that Boum-Boum was for the sound of his shot. Geoffrion is the creator of the slapshot; a member of the media dubbed him "Boum-Boum" for the twin booms of his stick slapping the puck and the puck's rebound off the boards (when it didn't crash into the net).
Geoffrion's number 5 was retired and raised to the rafters of the Canadiens' Bell Centre, where it now flies alongside that of his father in-law, Howie Morenz' number 7.
Rest in peace Boum Boum.
